The Ayushman Bharat scheme has taken a huge step forward. It’s now providing health insurance coverage to 13,000 petrol pump workers in Pune. As reported by The Times of India on March 26, 2026, this initiative is part of the government’s efforts to expand the scheme’s reach to more beneficiaries.
And this move is expected to benefit a large number of workers in the city. The scheme, which was launched in 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to provide health insurance coverage to over 100 million poor and vulnerable families in India. It’s a massive undertaking.
The 13,000 petrol pump workers in Pune will now be able to avail cashless treatment at empaneled hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This will provide them with financial protection against health shocks and ensure that they receive quality healthcare services. But the implementation of the scheme is not without its challenges – Dr. Vipin Kumar, a health expert, says it’s crucial to get it right.
According to Dr. Kumar, “The Ayushman Bharat scheme has the potential to revolutionize healthcare in India, but its success depends on the effective implementation and monitoring of the scheme.” The scheme has already covered over 24 crore beneficiaries across the country, and the addition of 13,000 petrol pump workers in Pune is a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage. It’s a big deal, and PM Modi’s words come to mind: “Ayushman Bharat is a historic initiative that will provide health insurance coverage to the poor and vulnerable families in India.”
The scheme has been implemented in partnership with state governments, and the center has allocated ₹6,400 crore for the scheme in the current fiscal year. That’s a substantial investment. The Ayushman Bharat scheme provides a health insurance cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year, which can be used to avail cashless treatment at empaneled hospitals.
And the benefits are extensive – the scheme covers over 1,500 medical procedures, including surgeries, and provides a wide range of diagnostic services. The scheme also provides an opportunity for private hospitals to participate in the public healthcare system and provide quality healthcare services to the poor and vulnerable families. But it won’t work without everyone’s participation.
In Pune, the scheme will be implemented through a network of empaneled hospitals.
It’s simple: the beneficiaries will be able to avail treatment at these hospitals using their Ayushman Bharat cards, which will be issued to them by the government.
As reported by The Times of India, the 13,000 petrol pump workers in Pune will be able to avail treatment at over 100 empaneled hospitals in the city. That’s a lot of options. This will provide them with access to quality healthcare services and financial protection against health shocks. But the government needs to ensure that the scheme is implemented effectively – no easy task. It’s not going to be smooth sailing.
