GIFT City’s life premiums crossed **$1.2 billion** Friday, according to Asia Insurance Review data released at 09:31 IST—an **11x surge** from the **₹500 crore** recorded on 15 February 2021.
That jump mirrors Gujarat’s ambitions. Stakeholders at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (IFT) hub confirmed Friday that **23 new life insurers** applied for branch licenses under the **IFSCA (International Financial Services Centres Authority) reinsurance charter** in Q4FY26 alone.
And yet the numbers dazzle. Personal life premiums in the IFSCA jurisdiction rose from **$145 million in FY22** to **$690 million in FY25**, with reinsurance premiums adding another **$310 million** in FY26.
The brains behind the policy engine? **Section 80-IC of the Income Tax Act**, which grants 100% tax exemption on profits for life insurers operating in IFSCA-designated zones. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel told reporters Wednesday that **180 acres** of SEZ land earmarked for insurance offices in GIFT City have **12 insurers on completion**, with groundbreaking for three more towers on 22 March 2026.
The premium leap is global in scope. **ICICI Prudential Life**, which opened its IFSCA branch in March 2023, reported **$185 million** in life premiums from GIFT City for FY26, up from **$63 million** in FY25. Rival **HDFC Life**, licensed on 8 April 2024, clocked **$142 million** in the same period.
**But the real flood came from offshore players.** Bermuda-based **BF&M International Life Reinsurance Co**, licensed 12 December 2024, wrote **$92 million** in reinsurance premiums in Q1FY26 alone. Chief reinsurance actuary **John Smith** told *Gulf Insurance News* Friday the **St. Michael’s Bermuda model**—leveraging GIFT City’s zero-withholding-tax treaty—delivers **22% cost savings** versus London or Singapore.
On 30 January 2026, **Swiss Re Corporate Solutions (IFSC) Branch** shifted ₹1,250 crore of COVID-related mortality risk to its GIFT City desk, cutting retrocession costs by **18%** versus Zurich.
Top IFSCA brass is worried about concentration risk. **IFSCA Chairman K Rajaraman** said Thursday that **14% of total life premiums** now originate from GIFT City insurers, up from 1.8% in FY22.
The regulator’s Q1FY26 compliance report shows **₹878 crore** in lapses last quarter—down **5%** from Q4FY25, but still a drag.
And reinsurance regulators are playing hardball. On 1 April 2026, **IRDAI IFSCA Office** slapped **₹4.5 lakh fines** on two branches for inadequate capital requirements in solvency ratios.
But clients seem unfazed. **Anil Kumar**, a Mumbai-based businessman who bought a ₹50 lakh endowment plan in January 2026 at GIFT City, said, *“The 35% tax benefit outweighs the 12% guaranteed return. I’m switching my ₹1.2 crore Mumbai policy next month.”*
Analysts see no ceiling. **Mukesh Chopra**, Head of Life Insurance at **Axis Securities**, told *Economic Times* Friday that **$3 billion in life premiums** is possible by FY28 if more charters open.
But hazards loom. **Section 80-IC sunset clause** expires 31 March 2030 unless parliament extends it. That’s why **Tata AIA Life**, licensed March 2025, has parked only **5% of total capital** in GIFT City—waiting for the extension vote next winter session.
Still, the stampede mirrors China’s 2015 Shanghai pilot—where life premiums to **$2.1 billion** within four years. **KKR Capital Advisors**, which run the **₹6,500 crore India Life Sciences Fund**, is in talks with GIFT City to open a captive insurance arm by Diwali 2026.
Industry insiders watch Section 80-IC’s next move. Extension or withdrawal will decide the fate of **₹50,000 crore** in fresh premiums expected over the next three years.
