ESI Scheme : From free treatment to family pension, ESI insured employees get 5 big benefits

The benefit of ESI is available to those employees whose monthly income is 21 thousand or less. This scheme is run by the Employees State Insurance Corporation.

The ESI scheme is run by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) for those employees whose income is low. In this, an ESI card is issued to the employees. Employees can get free treatment in ESI dispensary or hospital through ESI card or documents brought from the company. ESIC has more than 150 hospitals across the country, where treatment facilities for common to serious diseases are available.

Which employees are eligible for this ESI?

  • The benefit of ESI is available to those employees whose monthly income is 21 thousand or less. At the same time, the minimum wage limit for physically disabled persons is Rs 25000 per month. Contribution is made on behalf of both the employee and the employer in the ESI scheme. In this, there is a rule to contribute 1.75 percent of the salary on behalf of the employee and 4.75 percent of the salary of the employee on behalf of the employer.

  • The first benefit of the employees coming under the ESI scheme is free treatment. Through this scheme, apart from the insured person, the family members dependent on him are also given the facility of free treatment. There is no maximum limit on the expenditure on the treatment of the insured person and his family members.
  • Medical care is provided to the retired employee and the permanently disabled Insured Person and his/her spouse at an annual premium of Rs.120. The Insured Person is paid sick leave for 91 days in cash. This payment is made at the rate of 70 per cent of the wages.
  • The benefit of maternity leave is also available through ESI. In this, women are paid 100 percent of the average salary for 26 weeks in delivery and for six weeks in case of abortion.
  • If an insured person dies during employment, then the basic expenses for his funeral or up to a maximum of Rs 10,000 are given by ESIC. Apart from this, monthly pension is given to the dependents in fixed proportion. The pension is divided into 3 parts – first for the wife of the insured, second for the children and third for the parents.
  • The ESI insured person is given a monthly pension till he is fully recovered in case of temporary disability and for the whole life in case of permanent disability. At the same time, dependents also get pension, unemployment allowance, free treatment facility after retirement.
