Gold Hallmarking New Rules: Big News! Changes in the rules of hallmark in gold jewellery, the government issued this order

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has said that after March 31, 2023, gold jewelry and gold artifacts without Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) will not be sold.

Gold Hallmarking New Rules: A big news is coming out for those who buy and sell gold jewellery. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has said that after March 31, 2023, gold jewelry and gold artifacts without Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) will not be sold.

Nidhi Khare, Additional Secretary, Consumer Affairs, said that after the 31st of this month, the four-digit HUID, which was being used as a hallmark in gold jewellery, will not be allowed to be sold.

Decision taken after review meeting

This decision was taken after a review meeting of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) held on March 3, 2023 under the chairmanship of Union Minister Piyush Goyal. It was said that before the introduction of the six-digit alphanumeric HUID code, hallmarked jewelery used to have four symbols.

The four digits were replaced by three digits after the introduction of BIS Mark, Purity in Carats and Fineness for gold, Assay Center Identification Mark/Number and Jeweler Identification Mark/Number HUID. Explain that currently four digits as well as six digits HUID are being used.

Hallmark is the certificate of purity of gold.

Nidhi Khare, Additional Secretary, Consumer Affairs, said that hallmarked gold jewelery is being sold across the country. Even in those districts where it is not yet mandatory due to consumer demand for a quality product.

It goes on to say that Hallmark is a certificate of gold purity. On June 2021, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) made hallmarking of gold jewelery and artefacts mandatory. Since then, the government has decided to make gold hallmarking mandatory in a phased manner.

What is HUID and Hallmark Unique Identification?

  •  HUID number is a 6 digit alphanumeric code consisting of numbers and letters. Which was first introduced on 1 July 2021.
  •  HUID will be assigned to each piece of jewelery at the time of hallmarking and it is unique to each piece of jewellery.
  • At the Assaying and Hallmarking Center (AHC), the jewelery is manually stamped with a unique number.
